Saturday Morning Fever FM

As kids growing up in the 70s, every Saturday morning you would find my brother and me in front of the TV with a bowl of cereal like Lucky Charms, Crunchberries, Trix, Fruity Pebbles, Quisp, one of the Monster Cereals, or the short-lived Grins & Smiles & Giggles & Laughs.

Saturday morning was for cartoons.

Yes not only were we feeding our bodies with unhealthy food, we were stuffing our brains with cartoons. We knew all the network schedules but we also had TV Guide in case we forgot and that was good because we would fight over who had to get up and change the channel.

All those cartoons are still in my brain, so for this Famous Monsters mashup I pulled out the monsters I shared my Saturday mornings with as a boy.

The undisputed heavyweight champion of the world on Saturday morning was Bugs Bunny. Of course there was also Scoob and the gang and all the other Hanna-Barbera greats like Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, the Wacky Races, The Flinstones, and Super Friends. There were outliers like the Groovie Goolies, including an inspirational wolfman turned beatnik/surfer/stoner who was named Wolfie. And finally who can forget the strange worlds created by Sid and Marty Krofft, whether it was H.R. Pufnstuf, Land of the Lost, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, or The Banana Splits. I loved all of it. Still do.

Acrylic and ink on paper and canvas. Measures 27’ x 34”.
