Vinyl #9: The Darth Side of the Moon
Hi kids! Here we mash up two of my all-time favorites: classic rock and Star Wars.
Journey with me back to the 1980s to a time when high school Super Doug was smoking a lot of weed, dropping acid, and making it with hot chicks. Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon was such a perfect soundtrack for this golden era.
Now, some of you might protest that Pink Floyd is Progressive Rock, but these songs were on KZOK and KISW (Seattle’s Best Rock!), where all the classic rock action was happening. In fact, at the end of every year, KISW would do a top 100 rock songs of all time countdown, and I don’t know why we bothered gluing ourselves to the radios and running downstairs to call our friends on the phone because #1 was always Stairway to Heaven.
But think about this incredible sequence of albums: in 1973, they released Wish You Were Here. In ‘75, they released Dark Side of the Moon. Then in ‘79, out comes The Wall, which inspires all of us to rebel against our teachers (LEAVE THOSE KIDS ALONE!). And speaking of rebellion, Star Wars came out in the middle of this in 1977.
Finally, Darth Vader has to be one of the most iconic villains in movie history. When he boarded Princess Leia’s ship in the opening scene of Star Wars, little Super Doug’s mind was blown in the movie theater. Then, when The Empire Strikes Back came out in ‘81, we waited for hours in line. Finally, Darth Vader has to be one of the most iconic villains in movie history. When he boarded Princess Leia’s ship in the opening scene of Star Wars, little Super Doug’s mind was blown in the movie theater. Then, when The Empire Strikes Back came out in ’81, we waited for hours in line with my Grandma to see it. We were at the front of the line with two other kids, and when they lifted the rope to get into the theater, my brother tripped one of them so we could get the first seats. We went on to be much worse juvenile delinquents than that.
Do not underestimate the power of the Dark Side.
